BTB 2: Roughs to Final Comics

Welcome back to another Behind the Bones, folks. Today I wanted to give you all a peak into the making of the comic by showing what is probably the most important step: The Rough version/layout for the comic.

Here's a rough for the second comic, introducing Georgie. We see the main idea is mostly there in that original rough. One change was the panel with the words was made bigger and I decided not to have George stuffed as he walks away.

Here's the final version for comparison. You can see what changes were made. Almost no comic is one to one the same as the rough version.

Here's the rough for comic 3, Zindy's intro. This one went through a few changes especially with the upper right corner's panel.

Here's the final version. Went a little more outside the box with the panel work here. Also I totally forgot Zindy was going to have a bit of hair standing up. Kinda gave that to Nancy with her pony tail.

Here's the rough for the fourth comic, introducing Oltan the lazy Jack-O-Lantern. This one is fairly close to the original. I really liked the pose I got with Billy in that first panel and did my best to recreate it in the final version. Often I find little expressions/poses in the rough that I try my best to carry over into the finished comic.

Here's the final version. That image of Billy running through the word Help is a favorite gag of mine.

Now I'm going to post a few more of these rough comics without the finalized versions. If you want to check out the final versions of these comics you can read them in our archive any time.

Another comic that didn't change much from it's rough to final version. I always kinda struggle posing Nancy with the Stab-Bat.
Here's a rough for introducing Tommy the aspiring slasher. I wanted to include this one because I really liked the floating heads in the middle panel. It was another image I wanted to make sure to recreate in the final version. I always love in manga when we get chibi talking heads. It's a cute visual.
Last one for today. I wanted to mention how I like to make sure to write down dialogue I don't want to forget. I really wanted to make sure that dude says he can walk. I wasn't sure for a while what they were going to say at the end there but the Catan joke is another favorite of mine.

That's it for this installment of Behind the Bones. I hope you had fun seeing how the sausage is made! We'll show more roughs and the creative process as we continue.
